The M17 Rifle was implemented by the United States Army in 1967 as a replacement for the dissapointing M16 Rifle. The M17 remained as the standard service rifle of the United States for many years, into the 1970's and 1980's. By 1987, the M17 was beginning to show it's age, and the United States Army is in the process of replacing it with the M19.
The M17 is based off the 1964 AAI SPIW rifle.
